x. Brief Biography

Igor Karkaroff, Headmaster of Durmstrang Institute, is a former Death Eater (captured in 1980 by Auror Alastor Moody after the fall of Lord Voldemort). He was sentenced to Azkaban, until his release in 1982 to present evidence on the whereabouts of several Death Eaters. He pointed to Augustus Rookwood of the Department of Ministries. While in charge of Durmstrang Institute, Karkaroff made several drastic changes in the Defense Against the Dark Arts program, adding actual Dark Arts to the syllabus on top of the usual defense. (It is rather common knowledge that many Durmstrang students are from families with some sort of Dark Arts connection.)

During the 1994 school year Igor Karkaroff was a judge at the Tri-Wizard Tournament; which not only included the Durmstrang team, but Hogwarts and Beauxbatons, as well. While there, he spent a great deal of time with Professor Severus Snape, coming to him when the Dark Mark began to burn on his arm. Karkaroff went into hiding during the late spring of 1995, once everyone realized Voldemort was returning to power and reuniting the original Death Eaters.

"...But the man who was leading them up to the castle was wearing furs of a different sort: sleek and silver, like his hair.
"Dumbledore!" he called heartily as he walked up the slope. "How are you, my dear fellow, how are you?"
"Blooming, thank you, Professor Karkaroff," Dumbledore replied.
Karkaroff had a fruity, unctuous voice; when he stepped into the light pouring from the front doors of the castle they saw that he was tall and thin like Dumbledore, but his white hair was short, and his goatee (finishing in a small curl) did not entirely hide his rather weak chin. When he reached Dumbledore, he shook hands with both of his own.
"Dear old Hogwarts," he said, looking up at the castle and smiling; his teeth were rather yellow, and Harry noticed that his smile did not extend to his eyes, which had remained cold and shrewd." (GoF - Page 247)

x. Favourite Moments

"We all know Professor Moody considers the morning wasted if he hasn't discovered six plots to murder him before lunchtime," said Karkaroff loudly. "Apparently he is now teaching his students to fear assassination too. An odd quality in a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Dumbledore, but no doubt you had your reasons."

Harry fell backward, his glasses askew, clutching the cloak around him. A voice nearby said, "Ouch! Who's there?"
Harry hastily checked that the cloak was covering him and lay very still, staring up at the dark outline of the wizard he had hit. He recognized the goatee...it was Karkaroff.
"Who's there?" said Karkaroff again, very suspiciously, looking around in the darkness. Harry remained still and silent. After a minute or so, Karkaroff seemed to decide that he had hit some sort of animal, he was looking around at waist height, as though expecting to see a dog. Then he crept back under the cover of the trees and started to edge forward toward the place where the dragons were.
